about

Written as a "Shadow" for the final of SpinTunes 01.

As a judge I didn't have the impetus to Shadow about subjects I was going to have to 'judge', but as this round isn't about the judges decisions I thought I would.

It was all a bit 'last minute', but I'm kinda pleased with it.
(And the section I thought would be weakest ended up being on of my favourites!)

lyrics

A Nation's Journey Into Light
------------------------------------

Come now, gather now, here where the heather grows,
the land our Father's knew that we called home.
Ta'en now, hurried now, off tae another land
the burning in our hearts - to fear the unknown.

We've all gone - Ocean's wide - off to the other side
the wilds of America, empty and bare
the sailors are prison guards, their eyes are dead and hard
there's no compassion when our children cry

The waters take away the dead seem more each day
we wonder silently, 'Can we survive?'
The cold wind and the sea, it draws the life from me
we don't know if we'll end this journey alive.

Came from the sea, cross the land,
from the mountains, to our homes,
to the plains, to our broad ancient hunting ground
and took;
all we had, took our homes,
took our children and our wives,
took our land - brought us fear,
brought us sickness, brought us death.
Took our hope, as they stole from us everything
the white of their skin turning red]
with the blood of many braves
walked us on
from our homes
and now all we have's;
The sky and The earth and The water, our memory and pride

See the sand fall to the ocean.
See the sun climb in the sky.
All we need is here in plenty
(Oh, oh in Africa)

Take the beasts as we go hunting.
Pluck the fruit down from the tree.
We have all that we desire
(Oh, oh in Africa)

Stretching out upon the grassland
Resting now from all our toil
in the shade of leafy branches
(Oh, oh in Africa)

Comes a boat out on the ocean
High and wide it's sails unfurled
We have never seen its equal
(Oh, oh in Africa)

Watch the men as they approach us
Skin so white and bright as pearls
They are bringing gifts and trinkets
(Oh, oh in Africa)

See the ropes and see the netting
we will trade for food and furs
we will welcome them in gladness
(Oh, oh to Africa)

We approach them at the water
grinning faces match our own
watch a new dawn rise upon us
(Oh, oh in Africa)

Come now, gather now, here where the bullets fly,
the land our allies knew they called home.
Joined now, sailing now, off to the Gallic land,
the burning in our hearts to fear the unknown.

We've all gone, Channel's wide, off to the other side.
Our landings: Omaha, Gold and Sword.
We answer to the call and join this bloody war
and Death and Liberty are all our reward

Here now, running now, on tae the bloodied sand,
the gunfire taking down men by the score.
More now, hurry now, up tae the enemy.
The path to freedom lies behind our foe.

The waters crash on to the beach, it's body-strewn.
We wonder silently, 'Will we survive?'
Our rifles in our hand, we charge this foreign land
we don't know if we'll end this journey alive.

We don't know if we'll end this journey alive.
